  • The Nutrition Department provides dedicated diet counselling service, especially for diabetics with kidney complications (diabetic nephropathy and early renal failure cases) with specific goals of holding / reversing the condition and postponing / preventing renal dialysis – this effort has achieved very significant success rate.

    Another special feature is the Diabetes Pregnancy unit which functions to improve patient care, maintenance of the registry for gestational diabetes, and caters to the special needs of high-risk pregnancies associated with diabetes.

    The Department also has a functioning Diabetes Neuro clinic rendering services for people with diabetic neuropathies and a variety of other associated neurological problems.

    A unique feature of the VHS Diabetes Department is that it serves the Juvenile Insulin Dependent Diabetes patients with comprehensive lifetime free Medicare which offers free medicines, insulin, syringes, annual blood tests, chest x-rays, ECG, ultrasonography, fundus fluorescein angiograms, laser photocoagulation therapy (when needed), neurological investigations, investigations and treatment of diabetic foot problems, and treatment of inter-current problems in Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus. In addition, regular treatment of DKA, hypoglycaemia and other metabolic problems requiring hospitalisation are done free of cost for all IDDM cases. These services, with constant improvements have been offered to the economically/socially backward classes for the past four decades.

    To improve and monitor the natural history of (Type 1) Juvenile insulin dependent diabetes in South India, on a long-term basis.

    To look after Type 2 diabetics long-term with use of minimum/appropriate/and user-friendly drug therapies, diet and lifestyle advice, and keep close electronic medical records of their health conditions and suggest appropriate non-invasive and non-chemical-based interventions for the various co-morbid conditions so that the least amount of end-organ/micro-vascular complications occurs. We have succeeded to a significant degree in this endeavour and have maintained full computer-based medical data of our patients’ conditions over the past 48 years.
